World’s largest thermal solar plant could be coming to Nevada

While thermal solar power plants have had a bit of trouble catching on in the US, solar energy company SolarReserve is hoping to change that. The company recently announced it’s hoping to build a 2,000 megawatt facility in Nevada called Sandstone. With a planned 10 towers and more than 100,000 concentrating mirrors, the plant would be the largest of its type anywhere in the world. It would overshadow SolarReserve’s Crescent Dunes plant, currently the largest in the US with 110 megawatts of capacity. The new report comes via the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which reports the plant would cost about $5 billion to build and would deliver enough power for 1 million homes–the same amount of energy generated by Hoover Dam. Its energy capacity would also put it solidly in line with many nuclear power plants which, in the US, generate anywhere from 479 to 3,973 megawatts. New York’s First Micro Prefab Apartment Building

The Manhattan modular apartment building will be completed in December and will contain apartments with low rents, but small space. New York is known for its expensive and cramped living conditions. The city has a solution for one of those stigmas. My Micro NY, the city’s first micro-apartment building, will open shortly after construction is completion in December, Dezeen reports. The nine-story, 35,000-sf modular building is located in Manhattan’s Kips Bay neighborhood and was designed by nArchitects. While the median rental price for a one-bedroom apartment elsewhere in Manhattan is a whopping $3,400, market-rate units at My Micro NY start at $2,000. Affordable units will range from $950 to $1,492. The catch, of course, is that the complex’s 55 units will range from 250 to 370 sf, with 10-foot ceilings. The apartments will have a Juliet balcony, a kitchen, a closet, and a combined living and sleeping area. To get some space, tenants will have access to a gym, lounge, roof terrace, and garden. The modules are made of steel frames and...
